Thai dishes have their meaning in the mixture of four fundamental flavours: salty, sweet, spicy and sour. The combination of these flavours is one of the keys to its distinction with respect to the cuisines of other countries and regions.
Thai people eat mostly with a spoon and do not bring a fork to their mouth. Thai people do not tend to use a knife much when eating Thai food, as most dishes are served in bite-sized pieces, so there is no need to use a knife.
Known worldwide, this is the quintessential dish of typical Thai food. It consists of fried rice noodles sautéed with shrimp, chicken or tofu, and accompanied by soy sauce, fish sauce, egg, chili, lime and sugar. In some places they will also add peanuts.
One of the great characteristics of Thai cuisine and what makes it part of its identity is the value of sharing. It is very common for Thais to share all the dishes they have access to, so one habit that can be observed is that each person orders a dish and then distributes it among all the people at the table.
